We often receive phone calls seeking advice for health problems from owners who hope the issues can be handled at home.  We love being able to help you to help your pet.  But we hate to send you to the store in a time of crisis!  Here are some common products to keep on hand that we may advise you to use:

Hydrogen Peroxide – we sometimes advise that you use this to flush wounds.  We typically recommend using it only once – hydrogen peroxide will actually slow down healing if used repeatedly.  Hydrogen peroxide is also very handy in encouraging dogs to vomit!  Always call your veterinarian before inducing vomiting – sometimes it is just too dangerous!

Antibiotic ointment – yes, the same ointment that you use on your own scrapes can help prevent infection for your pet as well.  Just remember, you need to keep them from licking these ointments off for 10 minutes after application!

Benadryl – This is an excellent medication to have on hand for insect stings, spider bites and seasonal allergies!  Just like people, dogs and cats can be allergic to a variety of bugs as well as the great outdoors.  Again, call our office for the correct dose, but keep this anti-histamine in your pet medicine cabinet.

Epsom Salt – This can be handy for soaking wounds.  Again, please call the office for instructions on when and how to use Epsom salt.

Corn starch – This kitchen staple can be very useful to stop bleeding from nails that are cut too short.  Just pour some onto a plate or into a bowl and firmly press the tip of the bleeding nail down into the corn starch.  Repeat as needed.

Aspirin – Baby aspirin works great for cats, puppies and small dogs; the adult buffered aspirin is better for large breed, adult dogs.  Do NOT EVER give Tylenol, ibuprofen, or other human anti-inflammatories to dogs and cats!  Again, please call the office for the appropriate dose for your pet.

You’re off to a good start!  Of course you’ll need prescription medications to keep your furry friends healthy too.  Don’t forget to ask us about heartworm medication as well as flea and tick preventatives the next time you are in!
